On September 11, 2024, a meeting was held at the Odd Fellows' premises in Hamar, where the purpose was to investigate whether there was a will to establish a commandery that could gather knights who lived in the hinterland. The knights who participated agreed that the basis was present and that the name of the commandery should be Hamar and have its catchment area corresponding to the Hamar diocese.
The initiator, K.G.O.T.J. Tom Gjestvang, was elected the commandery's first commander.
Commandery Hamar was instituted during the order chapter in Røros on September 21, 2024.
The commandery's coat of arms was approved at the Grand Presidium Meeting on March 25, 2025. The coat of arms consists of a Birkebeiner with the king's child in gold on a black fortress wall. On silver, a red Templar cross in dexter and in sinister St. Olav in red.
